Knock off spinner removal tool for 52 larger size Jaguars & Aston Martins
Knock off spinner removal tool for 52 larger size Jaguars & Aston Martins
Tired of damaging spokes, spinners, and hitting car bodies
There had to be a better way than beating spinners with a hammer.
Short History: For some time now, I’ve not been able to make my original two eared tools. My machinist lost his home and shop and all of our equipment during the 2017 CA. fires. Everything was destroyed and it would have been too costly to rebuild and continue making any more of my tools. I tried several other versions, but fell short, until now.
My Final version: After having many starts and re-starts to replace my original two eared tools, the final tool is now in production. There will be no need to beat your spinners to death with a hammer anymore. I used a solid block of aluminum using CNC technology to create a one-piece tool with no moving parts. The tool’s design has a leather lined bridge. You simply hang the tool on the spinner’s ear that faces upward, push the tool flat on the other ear and turn. Attach my, included, socket to the hex shaft of the tool, then use your breaker bar or a torque wrench and apply force to tighten or loosen the spinner. Yes, it’s that easy and simple!
BENEFITS & INSTRUCTIONS, JAGUAR made a Continental spinner during 1968 through 1974 and supplied a Bronze part to lock onto the spinner. It had three small ears where a hammer could be used to remove or tighten an ear-less spinner. Without the bronze part, a hammer could not be used.
All my tools are made to never need to use a hammer. This tool eliminates the need for the bronze part. A socket can be attached to the new version tool and remove a wheel without using a hammer.
The kit contains, The kit comes with the tool, that is engraved with left and right directional UNDO arrows, a 1 ¼” high impact socket using a ½” drive to attach a breaker bar or a torque wrench, a wheel chock that keeps the wheel from spinning on the floor, and a storage bag to keep the kit with the car. Torque settings. Then a local shop owner, standard removal method, Changing a tire made Easier, When using a breaker bar, UNDO Directions, Warning on wheel spines, The kit storage bags.
Abraham, you can use the Jaguar pictures as some of them would use the ear-less spinners.
The Kits contains only, one aluminum polished tool, that is leathered wrapped to protect any metal-to-metal contact, a plastic insert to protect the face of the spinners, 1 1⁄4" high impact socket with a 1⁄2 drive, the tool has been engraved with left and right UNDO directional arrows for each side of the car, A wheel chock to block the tire from spinning on the floor during tire changes, and an embossed knockoff storage bag.
The tools are made using CNC technology that eliminates the need to use a hammer again. The tool has both ear angle milled into the sidewalls for left and right sided spinner ears. The tool has a bridge to hang the tool on the spinner that faces upward. Push the tool onto the other ear and turn by using the socket to remove or tighten. The bridge keeps the tool from falling off while changing a tire. It also frees both hands by using the tool.
Torque Settings:In a Lotus Elan printed manual has the only settings I've found and that was 200 to 220 fi/lbs All others only recommend using a lead hammer. Breaker bar to loosen a torque wrench to tighten.
A local shop owner: Who has always loosened his spinners with three good whacks with a lead hammer, does it. We tested his 3 good whacks method and he hit within 3 to 4 lbs of 210 each time. He did say, by using a breaker bar caused the wheel to spin on the floor and should block the tire.
The standard removal method is to loosen the spinner with a hammer while the car is still on the floor, jack the car up, remove the spinner and wheel, replace the tire and finger tight the spinner, let the jack back down and tighten with a hammer. Others said to roll the car a short distance and re-tighten with a hammer for a perfect seated spinner to te wheel. Some have said that just driving will tighten itself. That is true if you don't brake to seen before the spinner is fully tightened.
Changing a tire made easier. Use my wheel chock by jacking the car up just so the tire can spin, place the chock on one side of the tire to UNDO and then move the chock to the other site of the tire to tighten. Then let the jack down for a perfectly seated spinner to the wheel. It that simple
When using a breaker bar, always be pushing down rather than pulling or lifting on the breaker bar. You will have a better feel of what torque you are trying to get. A new larger wheel chock in all kits.
UNDO Directions:
FIRST, follow the UNDO direction on the spinners.
UNDO right side, turn clockwise towards the front of the car.
UNDO left side, turn counterclockwise to the front of the car.
To tighten, turn both sides to the rear of the car.
Warning on wire wheel splines:
No matter how tight the spinners are, the splines may need replaced.
Storage bags
All kits come with a black embossed knockoff carrying bag to keep the kit with the car. Except the Cobra and GT40, the tool is too large to fit into the case. The case can be added to any tool kit selected at check out.
Sizing your spinner
Questions I get on what size tool to order? For the 42mm size, measure across the base, not the ears of the spinner, it should be about 3 1⁄2 inches. The 52mm Jaguar size should be about 4 inches
Not all spinners are made the same, depending on who manufactured them, some Jaguar spinners have thicker sidewalls, slightly different ear angles and higher domes. My tool's design calculated all the manufacture's different variations, for a perfect fit.
Warning on Hub spline wear.
A lot of wire wheels have been around 50 years of more, and these components do age and become worn. If the hubs have worn splines, simply replace the unit. Check for wear every so often.
Spinners don't have to look like this.
Keep your spinners looking new
When your spinners are facing upward, you need to swing a hammer sidewise and could glance off and damage a spoke or a wheel well. Here is a good example of Jaguars that needs my tool.
A few of the many cars that use 2 eared 52 size Jaguar spinners.
